Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 2, Charlotte Knights 0 (7 innings) It was just seven innings, but the Knights (66-57) played a close one against the RailRiders (63-56), who outhit Charlotte 4-3 and spoiled a great performance by lefthander Noah Schultz in a 2-0 shutout loss. Schultz was efficient for four frames, allowing just four baserunners — three hits and a walk — while striking out two. The game remained a pitchers’ duel for 4 1/2 innings, but Adisyn Coffey wasn’t able to keep Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at bay,
surrendering a two-run shot to Anthony Volpe in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the difference.
Despite the shortened game, the Knights struck out nine times as a team and simply couldn’t convert with runners in scoring position (0-for-6), while leaving seven stranded. Three Charlotte players were able to get a hit — Ryan Galanie, Mario Camilletti, and Joey Wiemer — though there wasn’t anything to write home about tonight.

Birmingham Barons 8, Chattanooga Lookouts 0The Barons (49-68) have now won three straight against the Lookouts (52-65), taking an 8-0 shutout win, building off Wednesday’s 9-1 blowout. With seven scoreless innings, lefthander Shane Murphy was the star of the show, only surrendering four hits to Chattanooga while walking one and striking out six. Murphy rejoined the Barons in late July, but in eight starts this season, he now holds a 3.21 ERA in 53 1/3 frames. The lefty was in Charlotte for a couple of months but struggled through 14 appearances (11 starts) with a 6.42 ERA and allowed 24 homers, while giving up only three in Double-A with Birmingham.
Chattanooga was outhit, 9-5 with seven extra-base hits for the Barons. Caleb Bonemer mashed his 13th homer of the season, but it was Alec Briley and Dylan Campbell who shined in today’s win: each blasting a pair of dingers, accounting for five of the nine total hits and seven of the eight runs batted in for Birmingham. Despite scoring eight runs, Birmingham went just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, though only three were left on base.
The Barons rolled with two right-handed pitchers to close out the game, and though Pierce George gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth, the two pitchers combined to record five of the final six outs via strikeout, preserving Murphy’s fourth win of the season.

Greenville Drive 8, Winston-Salem Dash 7
It was not Mason Moore’s day on the mound, as he allowed four runs over the first three innings, setting the Dash (63-53) up for a tough game. Although the bats fought back, the Drive (52-62) came away with an 8-7 win. Winston-Salem was outhit 10-8, though two of the eight runs they allowed were unearned due to an error, which was likely the difference in the game. In the bottom of the eighth, Javier Mogollón made a fielding error at second base, which gave Greenville the chance to tie the game at seven and subsequently take the lead, 8-7.
Despite their eight hits, the Dash weren’t as strong with runners in scoring position, going 4-for-13 with nine left hanging on the basepaths. And they had runners flying around the bases all night, racking up seven stolen bases throughout the game. Both Ely Brown and Nick McLain posted two-hit days, combining for two RBIs and a couple of two-baggers, though Kyle Lodise was the leader in RBIs, driving in three with a double and a sac fly.
The Dash had taken the lead in the sixth, but the bullpen wasn’t able to hold it together. Lefthander Trey Cooper blew the save by surrendering two solo homers, but Aric McAtee wound up with the loss with two unearned runs putting the dagger in Winston-Salem’s hopes to come away with the win.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 9, Fredericksburg Nationals 5
Kannapolis (62-55) put up eight more hits (11-3) than the Nationals (69-47), but Fredericksburg fought back before dropping their second game of the series to the Cannon Ballers 9-5. Gabe Tanner got the win but struggled to throw strikes, walking five batters and striking out two while allowing four runs. The Ballers bullpen was elite once Tanner exited the game, giving up only one additional hit (Fidel Montero) in the remaining four innings, combining for just one walk (Jordan Morales) and striking out seven.
The bats went 4-for-16 with runners in scoring position, and though they left eight on base as a team, the nine runs were plenty to go home with a W. Efren Teran led the way with three hits, a stolen base and four RBIs, while Jaden Fauske and Matthew Boughton added two hits apiece. Right fielder Clay Burdette scored three of Kannapolis’ nine runs and blasted the Ballers’ only homer in the seventh.
