Earlier this month, CM Punk and Royal Rumble winner Roman Reigns had a terrific promo battle on Raw to set up their world title match as the main event of WrestleMania 42. They took some heavy shots at WWE Champion Drew McIntyre along the way, so he responded later in the week on SmackDown.
In a new interview on Busted Open Radio, Drew admitted that he was “legitimately upset” by what Punk and Reigns said on Raw. However, it’s not because he felt like they buried him. What set him off was how they positioned
his championship and the SmackDown brand as being lesser than their star power and Raw on Netflix.
“That’s the part that more got my attention. I don’t care, say whatever you want about me. I can protect myself, I’ll look after myself verbally. And to be honest, they weren’t even that bad. Whatever one person said, I mentioned on SmackDown, the other one defended me…
That didn’t bother me. It was just the stuff about the title and SmackDown, and making it feel a little less than, when they’re such big superstars. Just focus on the title, focus on each other.
So I went out and did a Braveheart-like speech on the Friday, ’cause I was legitimately upset. As far as I was concerned, that was it, done. And it seems to be done now. They’re focused on their stuff, we’re focused on our stuff.
And hopefully the SmackDown roster saw that and said, ‘You know what? Every time I’m in that ring, I’m gonna bring it 150%. I’m gonna show you all that I belong on this show, and SmackDown is the A show.’ Like back in the day, I remember being in the locker room as a kid when Taker was leading the charge, and he would get so angry when he saw the numbers, and Raw was beating us on a tour, or their show was better rated…
Go out there. Bust your ass. And if you don’t, I’ll kick your ass out the door. I’m [very] quiet back there. I’ll give you advice if you come to me. But if you’re bringing the show down, I’ll suddenly appear in front of you like magic, and I’ll kick your ass. And I’ll kick your ass out of the door if you get in my way.”
I don’t know about you, Cagesiders, but I’m a little disturbed by the visual of Drew McIntyre suddenly appearing in front of me like magic and ready to kick my ass for being so shitty at my job.
