Our “last place weekend” continues today, with the worst-in-AL White Sox taking on the worst-in-NL East Nationals. Two losses will give the White Sox their third-highest loss total ever, at 103. And a split
of this weekend still lands the White Sox with the 11th-worst three-season (486-game) stretch in baseball history.

The pitching matchup points to another 10-9 game. The White Sox are running out opener Tyler Gilbert and likely followed by bulk arm Sean Burke, whose inefficiency (4 2/3 innings per outing and almost 18 pitches per inning) runs most of his appearances into bullpen games. On the other side there’s Jake Irvin, who’s just terrible this season, a bloated ERA matched by not even two strikeouts per walk. The White Sox offense has no excuses on Saturday, whether or not they’re bolstered by FOUR Washington errors once again.

Chase Meidroth is mired in a horrific, 3-for-32 slump, but leads off. Edgar Quero is slumping badly at 6-for-34, but gets DH reps batting fifth. But such is life when you have a woefully inefficient offense — one player in Colson Montgomery with an OPS past .800, Kyle Teel pretty much there at .798, and and two others better than absolutely-subpar .700. (In fact, at this point the player WAR “improvement” in 2025 can most directly be placed on that pairing, providing almost two-thirds of the WAR on the roster. (In fact, only eight teams in White Sox history had a lower player WAR, including both 2023 and 2024, with another five teams hovering right around where the 2025 club is now.)
Well, enough up-talk for one evening. Game time is 3:05 p.m.CT and media info is boxed above. I’ll see you postgame, when we will learn whether I have finished by 2025 recapping season better or worse than .500.
