Okay, look, I get why Marquette men’s soccer may have wanted to try to goofball their way to a scoreless draw against #9 Georgetown on Friday night. MU scored just five goals in Big East play last year while going 1-7-0, and trying to muck up the conference opener on the road against a top 10 ranked team honestly seems like a decent plan.
However, Matthew Van Horn scored for the home team in the 17th minute, on what was Georgetown’s third shot of the match. That margin held to halftime, and Marquette
got outshot 8-0 through the first 45 minutes, 5-0 after Van Horn’s goal. Again, I get it if the original plan was “drag Georgetown to hell,” but once you’re down 1-0 early, you have to have a second plan. It didn’t seem like Marquette had a second plan.
Marquette’s first shot of the match didn’t come until the 68th minute. Georgetown went up 2-0 in the 73rd, and then 3-0 in the 78th, which ended up as the final margin. Marquette’s second shot was in the 74th, and they tacked on two more attempts in the 81st and 87th.
Four shots, all after trailing 1-0, all after halftime, three after trailing 2-0, two after trailing 3-0.
Credit to the Hoyas for their defensive effort here, to be clear. They had a part to play in stifling Marquette’s forward progress. But also Marquette is getting outshot 12.2 to 8.1 on average this season after shots went 13-4 here. This pattern is right in line with what the Golden Eagles have been doing all year before now.
Oh, and by the way? Tomiwa Adewumi? He of the 22 minute hat trick last time out? Eight goals on nine shots on goal this season? Sat on the bench for the first 23 minutes of the second half and ended up not recording a shot.
What was the plan here, exactly? Certainly doesn’t feel like there was a plan to actually win the game, much less actually rummage up a positive result. Feels like a very disappointing way to celebrate the appearance of a couple of votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll, y’know?
Up Next: Because scheduling is weird, Marquette will take a break from Big East play for a midweek contest coming up on Tuesday night. It will be the annual battle for the Milwaukee Cup as the Milwaukee Panthers come over from the East Side to Valley Fields for a 6pm Central time start. ESPN+ will have the broadcast. Milwaukee is 3-3-2 this season with a 1-1-0 mark in Horizon League action, and they’ll be visiting Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon as well.
