Bayern Munich have yet to lose a match across all competitions so far this season, but they made hard work of their recent 2-1 win over newly promoted SV Elversberg and were also held to a 0-0 draw at Schalke on the second match week of the Bundesliga season. In their other three of their five matches across all competitions so far this season, it was business as usual for the German Rekordmeister; a 5-1 win over VfB Stuttgart, 4-1 win over VfL Osnabrück, and a 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt in the Champions
League.
In the Bundesliga table, Bayern currently sit in fourth place behind SC Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund, and FC Augsburg, but it’s only early days in a season that follows a World Cup that most of Bayern’s players were involved in.
In a recent exclusive interview with Sky Sport, winger Luis Díaz said that he feels it’s going to take Bayern some time to hit the same heights that they did last season on their way to securing the domestic double and coming close to making it to the Champions League final in Budapest. Setting records for having the best start of any of club in Europe’s top five leagues (13 wins) last season, scoring the most ever goals in a Bundesliga season (122), and having the best ever first half of a Bundesliga season (47 points, goal difference of 53) is not going to be an easy feat to replicate this season.
“I think we’re not really the Bayern team we were last season yet. We’re not at that level yet, but I think that’s normal. It’s normal because we’ve had a heavy workload. We’ve played an incredible number of important games over the past few months, knockout matches in the Champions League and the cup. Many of us were also at the World Cup afterwards Then you have comparatively little time off. So it’s normal that the first few games can be difficult,” Díaz explained (via @iMiaSanMia).
After the international break, matches start to come thick and fast across all competitions for Bayern, with next month’s crucial stretch ending with the season’s second installment of der Klassiker against Dortmund. In that stretch, Bayern also have Bundesliga matches against Freiburg and Augsburg; clubs that are currently above them in the table, as well as a trip to take on Arsenal in the Champions League.
Still, though, Díaz has full confidence in the squad that they will soon start to hit their peak form at the right time — there’s simply too much quality in the squad not to. “The most important thing is to know that we have a great team, with great players. That we can play the way we did again. We have to work for that. I’m sure we’ll achieve it. We have everything we need to have an even more successful season than last season and achieve all the goals we’ve set ourselves, God willing,” the Colombian international enthused.
