Just when it looked like Bayern Munich was about to be down and out, they stormed back, looking better than ever. The DFB-Pokal Second Round match at FC Köln on Wednesday ended in a 4-1 battering by the visitors,
though Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany acknowledged it was far from easy sledding.
“It was a real battle, just like a cup match can be,” Kompany said in remarks captured by FCBayern.com. “I’m pleased with the fighting spirit of our lads. We came back after going down 1-0 and remained dangerous in the second half, maintaining a high intensity. Cologne kept fighting their way back into the game.
“I’m very satisfied. We also had some great chances in the first half. Cologne believed in themselves and battled for the second balls. We were sometimes too slow on our set pieces. Whenever we had pace on the ball, we were dangerous. It’s important that we utilize the squad; we still have players coming in. We now have three games in six days, so it’s all about recovery now — [Bayer] Leverkusen and Paris [Saint-Germain] will be tough, but we’ve earned this confidence.”

The games are coming thick and fast this time of year. It’s a short turnaround to a weekend match against a resurgent Leverkusen, under newly-appointed Kasper Hjulmand…and then next Tuesday it’s a huge Champions League battle against defending champions PSG in Paris.
Bayern Munich traveled to Cologne for a midweek DFB-Pokal tilt with FC Köln.
Heading into the match, the Bavarians were riding high, but the squad knew that FC Köln would not be an easy out in front of its home crowd. Ultimately, Bayern Munich pulled out a 4-1 victory doing exactly what they have done to every other opponent it has had of late — wear them down and pounce.
