While Tyson Fury is gearing up to return from his latest retirement to face Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11, Fury’s father has come out to claim that his relationship with Tyson has been completely destroyed thanks to interlopers, while also claiming that Tyson hasn’t been the same since his series of fights with Deontay Wilder. John Fury claims that there’s no jealousy against his son as he’s never wanted or taken any of his money, but plainly gives his assessment of his son at this point in his career
and explains why Makhmudov will be a tougher fight than many expect.
“I think he’s past his best. I’m a no-filter kind of guy – I say it how I see it. I love him, but there are too many people patting him on the back and telling him things that aren’t true, building him up like he’s invincible. He’s not and he hasn’t been for a while.
“Tyson has been gone since the Deontay Wilder fights, they finished him. Wilder completely done him. He’s not got a leg underneath him. He’s took a lot away from Tyson. Makhmudov is a problem for Tyson. I am the first one to say it.”
John Fury would continue by saying that he understands his son is testing himself, but that he just doesn’t have the legs that once made his such a problem for the rest of the division, as Fury’s size combined with his mobility made him such a unique heavyweight.
And while Tyson might’ve come out 2-0-1 in three fights against Wilder, John insists that every shot Tyson took in those fights took an irreversible toll to where Tyson will never be what he once was, emphasizing that “every shot he took matters.” Most fans will remember Tyson seemingly rising from the dead in their first fight after taking some huge shots from Wilder, who was regarded as the biggest puncher in the sport, but even that effort took something out of Tyson he’ll never regain as John sees it.
The whole world, however, will be able to see what Tyson has left in just a few weeks time.
