Maryland football linebacker Daniel Wingate was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List, the Maxwell Club announced Thursday. The Bednarik Award is annually bestowed to the best defender in college football.
Wingate has put together a stellar season through four games and is Maryland’s leader in the middle of the defense. A sideline-to-sideline player, he’s already racked up a staggering 39 tackles, which places him fourth in the conference. His performance against Wisconsin, which included 11 tackles, one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss, earned him Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Wingate is already on the Butkus Award Watch List, which is given to the nation’s best linebacker.
