Optimism increases that Virginia QB Chandler Morris will return Saturday vs Duke – Streaking the Lawn
Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris left the game on Saturday against Wake Forest after a collision to the head between two defenders. While his injury status has been in question since, Virginia’s offensive coordinator shared early Wednesday that Morris would participate in practice later that afternoon. The news, coupled with the fact that Morris was permitted to return to the sidelines on Saturday after the collision, provides some optimism for a return this week.
Gelnovatch Named ACC Coach of the Year, Six Cavaliers Pick Up ACC Honors
Virginia men’s soccer coach George Gelnovatch has been named ACC Coach of the Year–his third time winning the award. Gelnovatch led the team to an ACC regular-season title with an undefeated conference record.
Meanwhile, the roster tallied up honors of their own, including freshman Nick Simmons named All-ACC First Team and ACC Freshman of the Year. Simmons is accompanied by five teammates who also earned All-ACC honors.
Anonymous Donor Pledges Million-Dollar Matching Gift for Baseball – Virginia Athletics
Virginia has received yet another athletic donation. On Tuesday, the University announced an anonymous donor committed to match every dollar donated to the Baseball Enhancement Fund and baseball current-use scholarship growth–up to $1 million. The pledge is made possible by the recent House vs. NCAA settlement, the University says.
The donation will elevate Virginia’s baseball program, and follows in recent multi-million dollar donations to the football program, which is credited for some major recruitment wins for the team.
Cavaliers’ De’Andre Hunter ‘breaks’ Bulls’ Josh Giddey’s ankles with nasty crossover – The Athletic
You read that right. Virginia’s own national champion De’Andre Hunter made headlines this week for breaking ankles–almost literally– against the Chicago Bulls’ Josh Griddey. Hunter, who now plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, crossed up Griddey on the perimeter and drove to the basket for a two-handed dunk over Patrick Williams in the Cavs’ 128-122 victory. The crowd went wild.
Hunter was traded from the Atlanta Hawks last February, making this his first full season in Cleveland.
Kate Galica Named to US National Team Roster for President’s Cup – Virginia Athletics
Once again, Virginia’s non-revenue sports are seeing resounding success. Virginia’s junior midfielder lacrosse star Kate Galacia is invited to a training camp for the U.S. Women’s National Team at the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association President’s Cup. Galicia will play in the camp’s scrimmage later this month–elevating Virginia’s program and progressing Galacia on her hopeful path towards the national team.
