Bayern Munich have been hit by a horrific streak of injuries. The latest stroke of poor luck for the club added three new names to the injury bench for the German giants.
Before taking Borussia Dortmund head-on in Der Klassiker, Bayern’s injury list already had significant additions in Manuel Neuer, Jamal Musiala, Luis Díaz, and the coach himself, Vincent Kompany. However, few saw the game turn out to strike the home side with absolute disaster.
Ismael Saibari
The Moroccan’s brave duel to challenge for the ball after
Gregor Kobel’s first save off his shot ended poorly. The burly goalkeeper reached the ball earlier than Saibari and caught his foot at a wrong angle. Saibari went down immediately and had to be replaced as his ankle could no longer bear load.
Serge Gnabry
Another attacker who will be missing games. The German looked to have pulled something as he had to be subbed off barely five minutes after Saibari left the pitch. The winger had a troublesome groin injury in April; however, Gnabry could walk off the pitch without requiring support, unlike Saibari, which gives hope that his absence will not be a prolonged one.
Michael Olise
Olise seemed to manage his injury as he was seen limping in between attacks in the second half. Ultimately, Olise requested stand-in coach Aaron Danks to sub him out. Whether Danks should have subbed him earlier to prevent any potential aggravation will be a critical thing for Kompany to inspect and correct his junior for future games.
At this point, one can conclude that Bayern’s attack is under severe stress from the injury gods. With Olise’s injury, the attack has only Harry Kane and Lennart Karl remaining. The Bavarians have to make do with Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown, in addition to calling up the youngsters who impressed in pre-season and have carried that momentum into training.
This also explains why Kompany was attending the second-team training session despite a jam-packed schedule that led to his overexertion. Bayern needs every attacker they can find to deal with this difficult period.
