After an eight-goal scoring drought with Liverpool, Florian Wirtz exploded for two goals and two assists in Germany’s 4-3 friendly win over Switzerland. Both teams held the lead at different points in the match but the result was not in hand until Wirtz called game in the 85th minute.
Germany came into the match boasting four consecutive clean sheets but the defense left the pitch with a bit of wounded pride, conceding three goals for the first time since a 3-3 draw against Italy in the 2025 UEFA
Nations League quarterfinal stage.
“I’m not worried,” said Wirtz (via @iMiaSanMia). “We have a very good team and very good defenders. It’s been quite some time since we played together. The goals were avoidable. We’ll work on improving that. Of course we all want to reach the final and bring the cup home. We know it will be rough, but we have a great squad and we don’t need to hide.”
Wirtz’s lofty World Cup desires will need to overcome to 12:1 odds that rank Germany as the seventh-best option to bring home the FIFA World Cup trophy.
