After one season in Austin, Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Lavon Johnson intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to Thursday reports.
The 6’2, 310-pounder has two remaining years of eligibility to play one season.
A Pennsylvania product in the 2023 recruiting class, Johnson signed with Maryland over offers from Baylor, Indiana,
Michigan, and Virginia Tech, among others. In two seasons with the Terrapins, Johnson totaled 19 tackles (14 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss, and one sack in 18 appearances, missing four games during the 2024 season due to injury.
After entering the portal, Johnson signed a contract with North Carolina before flipping to Texas in one of the more remarkable recruitments for the Longhorns in the current era of unpredictability.
Set back by injury, Johnson struggled to impact the rotation in his only season on the Forty Acres, making his first appearance against Sam Houston and playing seven snaps against the Bearkats. Over the rest of the season, he only played in six more games with 63 total snaps, according to Pro Football Focus, recording five tackles and one tackle for loss.
The initial plan was for Texas to target one interior defensive lineman in the portal, but with an expanded number of scholarships and Johnson’s departure, that number could increase for the Longhorns.
