Look, I’m not breaking any new ground here, but Purdue is not a particularly good football team this year. And unlike in eras
past, Ohio State doesn’t lose to bad football teams under Ryan Day. So, I believe that this will be the first of three relatively similar games in which the coaching staff will look to fine-tune some things here and there, specifically in the running game, while also adding some new wrinkles on both sides of the ball, to not only expand what the team can do, but also what future opponents have to prepare for.
I think over the last two weeks, we have seen what Day and company believe is the best version of the OSU offense, and that is in allowing quarterback Julian Sayin to completely control the offense, and pass to set up the run, rather than the other way around. Additionally, with the very public launches of the Heisman campaigns for both Sayin and Jeremiah Smith, I would think a healthy heaping of both is in store.
But on a side note, while I am all on board for Julian and J.J. getting these pushes, where’s the institutional love for Carnell Tate? I know he might not be as physically freakish as Jeremiah Smith, but he’s pretty darn close, and his stats are pretty darn similar, especially over the past month or so.
Nonetheless, Purdue is bad, Ohio State is good, so I expect another Death Star-level effort from both sides of the ball for the Buckeyes, and hopefully, all of the starters can be out of the game by the fourth quarter. I also wouldn’t be surprised if tight end Max Klare gets a few extra targets playing against his former team.
