Brandon Aubrey missed an extra point on Sunday night against the New York Giants. No harm, no foul. Extra points are missed all of the time in the NFL, right? We shouldn’t be freaking out over a single kick. This isn’t like early in Aubrey’s career where he was automatic and the out-of-nowhere miss was almost funny because it was so rare.
The thing is, we are definitely not in those days anymore. There isn’t any real need to panic at this point in time, but Brandon Aubrey’s misses are becoming a bit
of a thing now. And that has to be discussed.
Concern around Brandon Aubrey feels fair right now
It should be noted that the extra point that Brandon Aubrey missed was made more difficult by the extra yardage applied to it following Javonte Williams’ ridiculous taunting penalty. It was literally harder than your average extra point is the overall point.
Aubrey struggled in his most recent NFL game before Sunday night, last season’s finale which was also against the Giants at MetLife Stadium. In fact, Aubrey has now missed a kick of some kind in three straight games.
This is the first time in his career that this is the case.
Again, no one is suggesting panic. Aubrey has a very large body of work that suggests this all might be an aberration, even if admittedly a sort of a large aberration which is a bit of an oxymoron.
It bears mentioning that the last two games took place in the same stadium, MetLife, and that it is outdoors and also known for not having the most quality playing surface in the NFL. None of these things are excuses, to be clear. They are simply data points in talking about the overall subject at large.
When you throw out terms like “concern” and “worried” people tend to take them at their most intense definitions. It is fair to say that you, me, or anyone is concerned/worried about Aubrey given his recent form, but that doesn’t have to mean that we are ready to totally freak out.
So you be the judge. How concerned and/or worried are you? A lot? A little? None at all?
