Happy B1G Wrestling week! We start off the festivities with the highly anticipated tournament pre-seeds today. As expected, hands will be wrung, pearls will be clutched, and we will all reach the conclusion that the guys and gals in charge have no idea what they’re doing. Fortunately for us, Cael’s approach is that you wrestle the guy in front of you and the results will take care of themselves.
The B1G threw us a twist this year and parted with the old “coaches vote” system in favor of a “Wrestlestat”
based algorithm. As you would expect, it’s not as transparent as we’d like. Even Cael admitted that the coaches “haven’t seen the scoring yet.” However, as the title implies, these pre-seeds aren’t set in stone. The coaches will meet on Friday and may challenge a seed position as long as their wrestler is with 15 points on the 100 point scale.
The B1G Seed Algorithm
Head to Head vs. the Field (25 points)
Common opponents Record (25 points)
Conference Dual Record (20 points)
Quality Matches (10 points)
RPI (10 points)
Conference allocation (5 points)
The Questions
This little break down adds up to 100 total points and it is used, like the NCAA algorithm, to run a round robin tournament of each wrestler against the rest in the field. How are the 25 points allocated in the head to head comparison? Does the better wrestler get all 25 points or are the points split like 25-0, 15-10, 12.5-12.5? The NCAA has published this information for their similar seeding system but the B1G hasn’t. At least not yet. So, as stated above, if you’re within 15 points you can challenge the seed which raises another question. Who adjudicates the challenge? Do they resort to a show of hands by the coaches or, like a challenge to a call on the mat, does the seed committee make the ruling to overturn their numbers?
Before you grab your pitchforks, remember the primary goal is to qualify for NCAAs so I’m listing the automatic qualifier spots for each weight. 2nd, if you’re not happy about Levi’s seed, it’s probably going to be challenged, but so may Marcus’ 1 seed. I’d happily keep both seeds where they are instead of flipping both.
That’s the forward, now on to what you came her for, we can argue the outcome later. I’m going to list by opening match to save time on creating a pretty bracket. We’ll provide a link to brackets later.
