The Dallas Cowboys opened their season with a disappointing 28–20 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. There were flashes from the rookie class, but also reminders of how much work remains. Caleb Downs produced the standout moment, while several other newcomers picked up their first meaningful NFL experience.
Here is how each rookie fared this week, listed in draft order, and any undrafted players worth noting after that.
Caleb Downs

Downs supplied the rookie class’ biggest highlight, flying in unblocked on a blitz and delivering a crushing hit on Jaxson Dart to force a fumble. That play showed the speed and aggression Dallas hoped it was getting. Starting in the slot, Downs was heavily involved, although his individual flash could not solve the defense’s problems getting off the field. There was plenty to like about his debut, but he acknowledged afterward that the unit needs to execute its assignments better.
Malachi Lawrence

Lawrence generated two pressures on 11 pass-rushing snaps, giving Dallas some encouraging disruption despite finishing without a sack. Getting near the quarterback was the positive, finishing plays more consistently is the next step. PFF also recorded a missed tackle against the run. Setting the edge and not getting caught out of position is something he needs to work on for the next games.
Jaishawn Barham

Barham contributed a stop behind the line and received meaningful playing time. His six tackles gave him a useful statistical start, although that alone does not establish how well he handled every assignment. There was little opportunity to assess his pass rushing with just two rushes attempts. He did commit a costly penalty by jumping offsides.
Drew Shelton

Shelton participated, but three offensive snaps leave little room for a meaningful evaluation. He was mainly used as a jumbo TE for blocking purposes. This was a small introduction to regular-season action.
LT Overton

Overton made an early contribution by getting his hands into a passing lane and batting down a throw. It was a useful reminder that defensive linemen can affect the passing game without reaching the quarterback. His pressure production was quiet, but that breakup gave him a positive moment in a limited role.
