Newcastle United chief executive David Hopkinson has confirmed the club will remain open to major offers this summer, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali continuing to attract interest.
Speaking as Newcastle released their latest financial results, Hopkinson addressed speculation surrounding potential departures and made clear that although no player would leave unless offers meet NUFC’s valuation of their assets, the door is open for business.
“We haven’t got an overall strategy with regards to
[moving] players out,” Hopkinson said. “We think through what players might or might not want to do this summer.”
Hopkinson referenced last summer’s high-profile sale of Alexander Isak as an example of how Newcastle would approach future deals.
“But if an Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms and we’re going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club,” Hopkinson said. “That absolutely does (mean extracting the maximum price).
“For me, Isak was a good sale (in terms of getting a British record fee),” Hopkinson added. “I wasn’t here for the Isak situation, so I don’t want to comment on something I didn’t see first-hand. What I do know is that players that leave this club will need to do so on our terms.”
Reports indicate Newcastle could consider offers in the region of £100million for either Gordon or Tonali, particularly if European qualification is not secured.
Tonali has been linked with Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City, while Gordon continues to attract Premier League interest, mostly from Liverpool.
