It was more like the Bayern Munich most of us are used to in a 7-0 dismantling of Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena on the eve of Oktoberfest in Bavaria. A Michael Olise hat-trick, a brace from Harry Kane and goals from Jamal Musiala and Ismael Saibari rounded out the scoring for the German Rekordmeister in a match that was truly just about all one-way traffic. Union Berlin were only able to muster two shots on target, both of which required decent saves from Manuel Neuer, one to deny Janik Haberer
and the other to keep out Tom Rothe.
There’s a bevy of headlines to take away from Bayern’s emphatic win before the majority of their players head off to meet with their respective nations for the international break, but it’s difficult to look past Kane as we are just over a month away from the Ballon d’Or winner being announced in London.
For Kane’s first goal of the match, which was a penalty conversion in the 39th minute after Olise was brought down in the box, the England skipper officially bagged his 100th Bundesliga goal, becoming the quickest player ever to have reached that milestone. It only took him 98 matches to do it — a truly remarkable feat, considering the previous mark was 31 matches more:
Kane then went on to score his 101st Bundesliga goal, heading home a beautifully-weighted cross from Olise at the near post.
Speaking after the match, the Bayern striker expressed delighted with the level his team was able to hit on the night following two tougher Bundesliga outings (at SV Elversberg and Schalke).
“We’ve been winning games and scoring goals recently but didn’t quite reach our top level — so it was nice to get to this level today, especially right before the international break,” Kane said (via @iMiaSanMia).
As far as getting to 101 Bundesliga goals, Kane was also ecstatic, but deferred credit to his teammates.
“I’m very proud, scoring 101 Bundesliga goals in such a short time. I’ve loved every second of it,” he added. “Playing with Michael, Lucho [Luis Díaz], Jamal, I know I’ll get chances. Thank you to the team and the club. It’s a great stat to have. Let’s keep it going.”
