We’ll do a more comprehensive look later, but here are some initial thoughts about the NCAA tournament field.
First, both NC State and SMU are in the First Four. Better in than out, but it’s also sort of damning with faint praise. Both teams need get out there to be taken seriously. Both are favored, but both run hot and cold.
We don’t know a lot about South Florida yet, but Louisville has been vulnerable, and if Mikel Brown is still out, then that’s even more true.
It’s nice to see Johnny Dawkins get
his UCF Knights in. It wouldn’t shock us to see them get to the Sweet 16. Don’t hold us to that yet, but there is a path.
If we’re Brad Brownell, we’d be really leery about Iowa. Coach Ben McCollum is a brilliant rising star, and he has a brilliant point guard in Bennett Stirtz.
UNC has a possibly tough draw in VCU. We don’t know them that well, but we do know UNC has been erratic and VCU is often dangerous. It could kick off another Dump Hubert boomlet if the Tar Heels lose.
Saint Mary’s and Texas A&M is intriguing because the contrast in styles is so strong. Bucky Ball vs. Bennett Ball!
Wisconsin and High Point could be fun. High Point will be overlooked, but that program has been rising for some time and, unbeknownst to most people, the school has really been lavishly funded, and that money has trickled down to the athletic department. It’s an ambitious place, and knocking off Wisconsin would just fuel the sense that High Point is rising.
Kentucky and Santa Clara is interesting. Herb Sendek spent some time in Lexington as a Rick Pitino assistant, and UK is going to be under immense pressure because of the struggles this season.
We’ll have more details and insights later.
