Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl wanted to acquire Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart last summer.
However, a rising cost and increasingly bitter relations between the club spoiled the deal — even though the striker desperately wanted the move. Ultimately, Bayern Munich walked away from the negotiating table and Woltemade made the move to Newcastle United.
“Newcastle paid €90 million for him in the summer, that’s a fact. We saw something special in him. The difficulty in the transfer also
stemmed from the publicity, where positions were discussed and leaked. We had set a certain budget for ourselves, which VfB Stuttgart didn’t accept. Then we had to make a decision and say no,” Eberl told Sport Bild’s Henning Feindt, Christian Falk, and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
When asked about Bayern Munich eventually getting Woltemade in the future, the executive did not sound optimistic: “Signing players from Newcastle is almost impossible because they have unlimited financial means due to the investors.”
Woltemade still seems open to a move to Bayern Munich at some point, but if he continues his progression, he could be more open to the type of money he would have access to at Newcastle.
