After dramatic failures to get out of the World Cup group stage in both 2018 and 2022, the German national team might want a more phased (realistic?) goal for the 2026 tournament in North America.
Just making the knockout round would represent some progress, but that — clearly — is not enough to satisfy the football hungry fans of Die Mannschaft, nor its coach.
When asked about his goal for the World Cup, former Bayern Munich manager and current Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann made his feelings clear
— he wants to raise the trophy.
“My statement from before stands. I have repeatedly emphasized that we want to become world champions. For me, there’s a difference between wanting it and saying that we will do it. Every player has a duty to show that on the pitch,” Nagelsmann said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Germany’s World Cup group is imminently winnable, but for many fans, seeing is believing. The Germans will have to take care of business early before it can even remotely think of having success in the latter stages of the tourney.
