Barcelona fans were thrilled to watch eight Blaugrana stars lift the World Cup trophy with Spain in America this summer, but one sad and notable absence was that of Fermín López.
The midfielder, who had a brilliant season at the club level and was a lock to make the Spanish squad for the tournament, missed out at the last minute due to a foot injury that ruled him out through the summer.
Fermín is now back training for Barça as they stay in England for the next couple of weeks, and he spoke to Catalan
radio to reveal his feelings about missing out on the World Cup and when he plans to return to action.
“It was the worst summer of my career. I got through it thanks to my family, my partner, and my friends. I needed help. I already had it before, but my [mental] coach helped me a lot to get through it.
“I didn’t watch the first few matches of the Spanish national team in the World Cup; I couldn’t. I wanted to be there, and towards the end, when I was feeling a bit better, I decided to go see the final live in New York.
“I’m feeling better every day. I have no discomfort, which is important. If everything goes well, I could play a few minutes in the Gamper.”
It must have been a brutal experience for Fermín to miss out on his dream and see his teammates win the trophy without him, but it’s good to know that he was able to seek help and get through a tough period.
Fermín will definitely play in the World Cup one day, hopefully in four short years as a Barça superstar looking to help Spain win back-to-back trophies.
