Being a backup goalkeeper at a World Cup is often a thankless job, but it remains one of the most important roles on any championship-winning squad. Ron-Robert Zieler accepted that responsibility during Germany’s victorious 2014 campaign, providing depth behind Manuel Neuer while helping prepare the team throughout the tournament. Although he never stepped onto the field in Brazil, he earned a place in German football history.
Ron-Robert Zieler’s role in 2014
As Germany’s third-choice goalkeeper, Zieler trained alongside Neuer and
Roman Weidenfeller while remaining ready if called upon. His role centered on maintaining the high standards expected during training sessions and supporting the squad throughout the month-long tournament. While his contributions came behind the scenes, they were still part of Germany’s successful World Cup-winning effort.
What is Ron-Robert Zieler doing now?
Unlike many of his 2014 teammates, Zieler is still active as a professional player. The experienced goalkeeper returned to Hannover 96, where he has served as both a starter and veteran leader in recent seasons. In 2025, Zieler moved to FC Köln. His longevity has been impressive, and more than a decade after lifting the World Cup trophy, Zieler continues to contribute on the pitch while mentoring younger goalkeepers.
