The Mets have placed catcher Luis Torrens on the injured list, retroactive to Sunday, September 7, with a right forearm contusion. In a corresponding move, the team called Hayden Senger back up from Triple-A.
Torrens was injured during Saturday’s loss to the Reds while blocking a ball. In his own words, he expects this to be a minimum IL stint, which means he should be back midway through the team’s upcoming homestand. The club wanted to avoid having two banged up catchers on the roster with Francisco
Alvarez fresh off the IL and still dealing with a broken pinky and a separate thumb injury, which was the reason for his stint on the IL.
Torrens noted that his injury was hindering him from extending to throw the ball, and his propensity for gunning down baserunners has made him a key contributor to this year’s Mets squad. Torrens’ bat has also come around as of late, especially since Alvarez hit the IL on August 18. In 11 games since then, Torrens is slashing .289/.325/.605 with three home runs, 13 runs batted in, eight runs scored, and a 157 wRC+ in 41 plate appearances.
Senger, who was working at Whole Foods this offseason, has gotten plenty of chances given the abundance of injuries at the catcher’s position for the Mets. In 30 games, he’s slashing .174/.216/.188 with a 16 wRC+, but he has displayed some solid defense behind the plate. This will be his fourth separate stint in the bigs this year.
