Mainz 05 head coach Urs Fischer did not sound overly confident that his team could go to the Allianz Arena and pull out a victory over Bayern Munich, but he did offer a brief statement — “anything is possible”
in his pregame remarks.
As it turns out, maybe a victory was not on the menu, but earning a 2-2 draw to gain a point, was just what the doctor ordered for Fischer.
“Of course, we’re satisfied. Getting a point in Munich isn’t something you can take for granted. Looking at how the game went and then conceding a penalty right before the end, it’s naturally a bit frustrating. Nevertheless, the joy outweighs everything else. We didn’t give Bayern too much, even though they certainly had their chances. During those periods, we could rely on our goalkeeper, who kept us in the game with some excellent saves. Overall, we defended our goal with everything we had,” Fischer said (as captured by FCBayern.com).
In truth, Mainz was dominated by Bayern Munich in terms of possession, but it did take advantage of two big defensive lapses by the Bavarians and relied upon some excellent defending from Kacper Potulski and outstanding work in goal from Daniel Batz to power itself to the draw.
For Fischer, this was absolutely an unexpected step in the right direction.
