The Dallas Cowboys are continuing to add to the running back position. Before Malik Davis went down with season-ending hip surgery in practice last week, the team had already added Emari Demercado via waiver claims after training camp. Then, after Davis was placed on injured reserve, they signed Israel Abanikanda from the practice squad to the active roster.
Now it looks like the Cowboys will be signing Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Goodson from their practice squad, per Aaron Wilson. Goodson started
his NFL journey as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 2022, but saw his first career snaps after signing with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023.
He spent the next three seasons there and only eclipsed 100 rushing yards in a season once. Goodson joined the Falcons this offseason and had a few standout preseason moments, particularly against the Colts.
Looking at the way Goodson broke free for the touchdown run, his running style looks very similar to what Dallas had in Malik Davis. Maybe the team views Goodson as a better replacement for that skill set than someone like Abanikanda.
Stephen Jones says talent acquisition is 24/7, 365, and adding Goodson shows Dallas was looking to upgrade after what they saw against the New York Giants Sunday night, when the backups to Javonte Williams didn’t perform well.
There’s no information yet on the corresponding move for the Cowboys to sign Goodson to the active roster.
