New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is bringing numerous coaches with him who were on his staff at Utah. One of those names is Koy Detmer Jr., who will be Michigan’s new quarterbacks coach.
Detmer has high
familiarity with new Michigan offensive coordinator Tim Beck, who was Utah’s offensive coordinator in 2025. Detmer was with Beck at Syracuse as a graduate assistant, then went to New Mexico with Beck as an offensive analyst, and subsequently followed Beck to Utah to serve as the quarterbacks coach.
Detmer will be tasked with fine-tuning Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood’s mechanics and helping him in the film room. There is room for optimism with the hiring of Beck, especially after Utah quarterback had 310 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, and 148 rushing yards with 3 touchdowns, in a 44-22 Las Vegas Bowl win over Nebraska on Wednesday. On the season, Dampier ranked No. 7 in the nation in Total QBR (84.4) with 2,490 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, five interceptions, along with 835 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.
