Although the Yankees lost an annoying one yesterday, the Blue Jays lost in hilarious fashion, keeping New York’s slim division chances at 7.1 percent. The only way to keep that number from going down is to win games and hope the Royals didn’t blow all their offense in one outing, which sets up the third game of this four-game set with the Orioles.
Thursday night, lefthander 1A was brilliant, as Max Fried struck out a baker’s dozen Os en route to an easy 7-0 series-opening win. Now, lefthander 1B will
attempt to follow that example, with Carlos Rodón bringing his 3.11 ERA to bear under the lights Saturday. In particular, ‘Los has been on a very strong run since the start of August, making nine starts and allowing more than two runs just twice. Of course he’s been a hard-luck loser in each of his last two outings, throwing six innings and allowing two runs in back-to-back starts against Detroit and Minnesota, taking the loss both times.
Sugano has been a letdown for Baltimore, one of many in this disappointing season. A 4.39 ERA on it’s own isn’t terrible, but a 15.5 percent strikeout rate is really hard to be successful with in this era of hard contact, even if he does induce more than the average share of groundballs. When you can elevate against him, the ball tends to go very far — and that might be how the Yankees win this one.
The left side of the infield remains as frustrating as ever, with Ryan McMahon and Anthony Volpe at third and short, batting eighth and ninth respectively. Ben Rice is behind the plate with Austin Wells riding pine today.
