After weeks of battling a calf injury he sustained while playing for Bayern Munich, German national team goalkeeper Manuel Neuer returned to goalkeeper training on Monday.
Neuer had several bouts with his calf during the second half of the season for the Bavarians, but the veteran’s goal will be to be fully healthy ahead of Germany’s second World Cup tune-up. The Germans will face the United States on Saturday at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.
Oliver Baumann filled in for Neuer during Germany’s 4-0 victory over Finland on Sunday and both Alexander Nübel and training goalkeeper Jonas Urbig both played in the “reserves game” earlier on Monday, which Germany won 1-0.
When the World Cup starts, though, Neuer is expected to back at the top of the depth chart for Julian Nagelsmann. A big key will be to see how Neuer’s calf responds to a more rigorous schedule. Of course, Neuer will be hopeful that there are no setbacks moving forward.
