Heading into next week’s MVP fight card on ESPN, Alycia Baumgardner talks about looking forward to making some big fights against Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor as she believes those kind of matchups would only continue to grow women’s boxing. According to Baumgardner, she’s already pitched the fight to both, and says they both seemed amenable to the idea. Check out some of what she had to say below!
Baumgardner on if she still wants fights against Taylor and Serrano
“Absolutely. When we talk about what’s next for Alycia Baumgardner, when we talk about who’s going
to elevate with her, who’s neck to neck, that’s Amanda and that’s Katie. These two women have grown the sport so much, have been trailblazers in the sport. I appreciate their skill, I appreciate what they’ve done, and I want to match that. I believe that a fight with Amanda Serrano and myself in New York City would be one of the biggest fights.
“When people talk about ‘what’s next for Alycia?’ It’s not Caroline [Dubois]. It’s Amanda or it’s Katie. I’ll go to Ireland and fight Katie. I don’t care to be the underdog, I’ve done that plenty of times.
“We need these types of fights to grow the sport as a whole and they do a great job doing that. I don’t think Amanda would disagree, or Katie. I’ve actually talked to both of them so, they know.”
On what her conversations with Taylor and Serrano have been like
“It’s always a respect thing. You know, when we talk about calling somebody out, I think it’s always a respect thing first. So it’s never like ‘I’m better than you’ and this, that and the other. Obviously, we both believe in that but it’s a respect thing. I told them how I felt, I told them what we could do as two women growing the sport and what I would like to do, which is share the ring with either one of them. They agree.”
