Welcome to the Morning Commute
It’d been a tough week for Kellie Harper and the women of Mizzou Hoops. Despite not leaving the state of Missouri, the Tigers dropped their first two games of the season, one to arch rival kansas and the second
to Troy in a disappointing 18-point home loss. So with a trip to Disney World in the offing, it was imperative the Tigers get off to a strong start for the WBCA Showcase.
And a strong start it was, with the Tigers stifling Washington State on their way to a 71-54 win. Shannon Dowell continued her torrid start to life as a Tiger, posting a third double-double, while Grace Slaughter added 13 and 6 in the win.
Most importantly? It was a strong defensive showing for a team that just gave up triple-digits against Troy on their home floor. A strong bounce back performance was needed, and a strong bounce back performance was delivered. As covered by our very own Dylan Heinrich:
Mizzou was the better team from start-to-finish, leading for 37 minutes and 18 seconds of the game. The defense forced Wazzu into difficult shots all game, as the Cougars only shot 29% from the field and 23% on threes. The Cougars only got six attempts from the FT line as the Tigers only committed eight fouls all game. This sort of discipline paid dividends as no players were pulled due to foul trouble.
The Tigers will head to Fort Meyers for a pair of games this week before returning to Columbia for a string of home games.

So far Drink has proven he’s capable of building a program. He’s increased the talent level, he’s gotten fan engagement, and Missouri is a better football program for him having been the coach. I don’t know what he’s going to do in the coming weeks, I hope he chooses to stay in Columbia and see if he can take it a step further. But regardless if Drinkwitz is the football coach at Missouri, or it’s someone else, the only way forward is by sustaining the defense and being better and more diverse on offense.
We’re probably less than two weeks from learning what will happen with the future of the Tigers program. Stay tuned!
“Our operation time for our kicker was too slow,” Drinkwitz said of Meyer, “We saw it on the first one that snuck in; we told him to speed it up, and he didn’t, and he got blocked again.”
Might explain why Meyer wasn’t back out for the next field goal!
Both Logan and I had partial lobectomies. For me, I opted for the partial instead of the complete removal mainly because it was an outpatient procedure; I’d seen enough of hospitals in the past year. The recovery… sucked. My incision hurt like a bitch and I looked like a victim of a throat slashing gone awry on an episode of Law & Order.
A lovely and humorous read. Get to it!
- Over at Rock M+, Matthew Harris is getting excited about the latest Mizzou Hoops lineups, the PFF grades from Oklahoma are a bit of a mixed bag, and we’re debating our favorite Mizzou Hoops players of the past 10 years on the forums.
