In recent years, CONCACAF has expanded its competition adding a Nations League for countries in the confederation as well as joining with CONMEBOL to hold iterations of a joint Copa America. It appears now that talks have begun with UEFA to hold a joint Nations League between North American and European national teams. According to the Guardian, the move is coming as the confederations are pressuring for the exit of Gianni Infantino following his plan to privatize aspects of the World Cup.
Both confederations
hold the Nations Leagues along the same calendar so the dates already line up for planning purposes. Details are still emerging, but the new league would put the top teams in Europe in League A along with those in North America like the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Another factor to consider is that FIFA may need to approve the new tournament amid the upheaval around Infantino.
The move would not only bring a higher level of competition to CONCACAF teams, it would also bring the added attention and revenue from top European teams playing meaningful games in North America. Additionally, it would create a chance to play top teams abroad for the USMNT, a scheduling opportunity that is often missed for the side.
