Back in 2006, we did a music post for Christmas with a James Brown holiday jam and a picture of JB in a Santa suit. Looked fun and what better way to celebrate Christmas?
Until we woke up and realized that
Brown had died on Christmas Day. Seemed like a fun idea up until that point.
Groove on, James, wherever you are!
This year, we thought we’d do a bit of a soulful Christmas again, but this time we’re not taking any chances: we love Louis Jordan but there’s no chance of a repeat with James Brown: Jordan passed away in 1975.
Actually we’re going to link two songs. The first is May Every Day Be Christmas, from 1951 and the second is Santa Claus, Santa Claus, from 1968.
We used them both because, well, it is Christmas and every Christmas is better with a little Louis Jordan. And second, we think it highlights on of the greatest thing about him, which is that his voice stayed remarkably consistent. Most singers voices change over time. Look at Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. Dylan has had an amazing career but his voice now sounds like a buzzing fly. Springsteen forgot how to sing a long time ago and no one told him.
In Jordan’s case, his voice is as buttery smooth in the 1970’s as it was in the 1940’s. He was a remarkable talent who lived to entertain.
So Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it and for those who don’t, we hope some of the joy of Christmas visits you too.
