Vincent Kompany has made a name for himself as one of the brightest young coaches in Europe. In only his second season, Bayern Munich has nearly outperformed its previously set standards and isn’t showing signs of slowing down. Former Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry, who was one of Kompany’s coaches with the Belgian national football team, dove deeper into how the 38-year-old coach has become a revelation for the Bavarians.
“At first, many thought he wasn’t the right person for the job, but
he’s doing an outstanding job”, Henry began (Sports Illustrated as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “When you put someone like him in the right place – with people who understand him – you get the FC Bayern of today. I worked with him when I was ium [sic]. You could already see how intelligent he was back then.
“He speaks many languages and is very clear about what he wants. He doesn’t hesitate, and when he says something, he means it. He’s a strong leader and has proven he can deliver when given the right players. Bayern’s management deserves a lot of credit for signing him despite Burnley’s relegation, because they saw something in him that fit the club’s identity. That was a smart decision.”
The 2025/26 season was a highly impressive one for Bayern and Kompany, but you can rest assured that they’re planning to outdo themselves next season.
