Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya fielded a few media questions about the recent discussion as to whether Terence Crawford is a better boxer than Floyd Mayweather was, Dana White looking to amend the Muhammad Ali act, and more. Check out some excerpts below.
De La Hoya on those who believe Terence Crawford was a better fighter than Floyd Mayweather
“I have to disagree because Floyd Mayweather toyed with Canelo. Like, he literally toyed with him. He didn’t get hit at all, not one time. And Crawford, yeah he’s more of a fighter-boxer, Mayweather’s more of a boxer…but I think Mayweather is much
more superior than Crawford — not just because he beat me or it was a close fight or whatever, or that I stepped in the ring with Mayweather — but I really feel that technically Mayweather is a better fighter.”
On those who want to amend the Muhammad Ali act
“It’s in place for a reason. I’m telling you right now, if they change the Muhammad Ali act, every fighter out there, every manager is going to be in trouble because you’re not going to be able to negotiate purses or this or that — you fight for what they pay you. That’s not a way to do it. It’s a free negotiation. You have managers for a reason, you have the fighters who should be making the bulks of the money, we put our lives on the line. We go in the ring, fighters die, for what? To get 10%? That’s bullshit.”
On Vergil Ortiz vs Erickson Lubin
“I can’t wait for that fight. Literally the whole, we just announced Kid Austin vs Jojo Diaz who was possibly in the Fight of the Year with Regis Prograis. I’m just so happy for Jojo because he’s kind of like revitalized his career and now he has another shot at Kid Austin. But I’ll tell you one thing, if Kid Austin does what he did to Tevin Farmer, Kid Austin is the next superstar in boxing.”
