Rutgers earned a much-needed series victory over the weekend taking two out of three from Maryland at Bainton Field in Piscataway.
The Scarlet Knights are now 24-27 overall and 11-16 in Big Ten play.
Game One
Rutgers started the series off hot using its power bats.
The Scarlet Knights hit two first-inning home runs to spark a 5-3 win over the Terrapins in game one of the series on Friday.
Matt Chatelle got the scoring started with a two-run home run to get Rutgers on the board. Ryan Jaros followed with a solo
shot to put the team up, 3-0.
This was enough for Zack Konstantinovsky. He earned his fourth win of the season going 6 2/3 innings allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and just one walk.
Jack Sweeney drove in a run with an infield hit in the fifth inning. Maryland attempted to cut into the lead late but could not put up a crooked number to get closer.
Game Two
The Scarlet Knights stayed hot offensively on Saturday with 12 hits during a 10-0 win in eight innings.
Tyler Wiltsey got the scoring started in the fourth inning with an RBI single. Rutgers added three more in the fifth inning as Matt Chatelle dropped down a sac bunt to score a run before a two-run triple by Yomar Carreras.
Leading 5-0, Chase Krewson delivered the big blow with a three-run home run in the seventh inning. He finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. Carreras finished 4-for-5 with three RBI.
Vincent Borghese was strong on the mound allowing just one hit over 7 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Game Three
The series finale featured big-time offensive performances from both sides — which was the theme of the series for Rutgers.
Despite building an early lead in the second inning, Rutgers could not hang on as Maryland stormed back to salvage the finale, 11-7.
Maryland got on the board in the top half of the first before Rutgers got going. Jaros hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first before Charlie Meglio hit his ninth of the year in the bottom of the second. Rutgers built a 5-1 lead in the second but Maryland scored four runs in the third to tie the game.
A Trey Wells home run and a wild pitch led to two runs in the fifth inning as Rutgers went back in front 7-6. It would not score again as Maryland finished the game with five unanswered runs to close it out.
