Tom Bischof had plenty of reasons to smile after Germany’s 2-0 victory over Serbia, but his first international goal clearly stood out as the highlight of the night.
The Bayern Munich midfielder played an important role in Germany’s performance and was delighted with both the result and the atmosphere inside the stadium. Bischof described the experience as something difficult to put into words, while also believing Germany could have made the victory even more comfortable by taking more of its opportunities.
The goal itself was a particularly memorable moment for Bischof. After finding the back of the net, he celebrated with a slide that apparently came at a small physical cost. It is a fittingly lighthearted detail to accompany what was otherwise a hugely significant moment in his young international career.
Bischof reflected on the night after the final whistle.
“It’s an indescribable feeling. The stadium was on fire today. It was simply fun. We were fully focused and could have scored a couple more goals. Then it would have been a bit easier for us, but I think we created a lot of chances and played a good game. I was incredibly happy with my goal, but my knees hurt from the slide,” Bischof said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
For Bischof, the performance offered another encouraging step at international level. Scoring his first Germany goal while contributing to a convincing win gives him a moment he will certainly remember, even if his knees might have preferred a slightly less enthusiastic celebration.
