The San Francisco 49ers will be playing their most important game yet this year in Week 5 as they travel to face the Seattle Seahawks. This can be seen as “Part 2” of a test for the 49ers offense going up against respectable defenses. The Denver Broncos were first, and might not have been the best test since several players were injured. The Seattle Seahawks are a defense that has given the 49ers fits in the past. Brock Purdy has entered the MVP conversation, and this game can make or break that conversation continuing
past Week 5. This will be an afternoon game on Fox. Kevin Burkhardt has the play-by-play, and Tom Brady will be doing color.
The 4-0 49ers head to Seattle 2-0 in their division. A win here could impact the NFC West as a whole. For the 49ers specifically, starting the season 3-0 in a competitive NFC West is something anyone would sign up for.
Last week, the 49ers faced the Broncos, and that defense gave the 49ers all they could handle for three quarters. Brock Purdy eventually found the cracks and put the game out of reach, but it was a nail-biter for most of the game. Most of that was due to an inept Broncos offense, which left several plays on the field.
The Seahawks didn’t leave plays on the field in their game last week; rather, they just took their foot off the gas, letting the Los Angeles Chargers back into things when it should have been over. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw a costly interception at the very end, but the Seahawks were definitely playing with their food towards the end of the game. They have only one loss on the year, coming against the Washington Commanders. The 49ers start a difficult stretch of their schedule, traveling to face the Broncos, hosting the Kansas City Chiefs, and then facing the Chicago Bears. The 49ers can happily get them prepped up for that schedule by handing them another “L”.
In 2025, the 49ers failed to score a single touchdown against the Seahawks in their last two meetings. This was due to the injury bug decimating the roster and the Seahawks defense having Shanahan’s number. The biggest issue was the wide receivers, but the 49ers have improved a lot. Brock Purdy has yet to take a sack in 2026, so the offensive line is much improved from last year as well. We’ve seen nothing but good things from the 49ers thus far, but to be the man, you gotta beat the man. In this case, with the 49ers being at the top of several power rankings, they need to prove that legitimacy by beating the reigning Super Bowl champions.
The 49ers will be without fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who suffered a knee sprain last week. They also will be without defensive lineman Nick Bosa (calf), James Thompson (ankle), and safety Marques Sigle. Mykel Williams, who began the season on the PUP list, will start his first game for 2026 after returning from a knee injury. However, he is listed as questionable along with cornerback Upton Stout (shoulder).
The Seahawks will be without running back Zach Charbonnet, cornerback Julian Neal (hamstring), and linebacker Chazz Surratt (calf). Running back George Holani (ribs) and wide receiver Irvin Charles (knee) are questionable.
