Likely the most obvious observation about the Buffalo Bills offense through two games is how Joe Brady is allowing Josh Allen to play freely.
It’s led to 36 points against the Texans in Houston and 41 at home against the Lions.
Allen has been sensational, and his phenomenal skill set as been on full display in each contest.
Of course, Allen’s arm strength is probably his greatest attribute as a quarterback, and Brady is tapping into every last ounce of it.
Through two games, Allen’s average depth of
target is 10.5 yards, which is tied for third among all quarterbacks. And it’s the highest aDOT since his rookie season.
Allen’s average depth of target was just 7.8 yards in 2025, the 11th-lowest out of 45 qualifying passers. The last time Allen’s aDOT eclipsed 9.0 yards for an entire season was 2022.
How about this for another field-stretching metric — 16.7% of Allen’s attempts been have 20-plus air yards. That figure was 11.5% last regular season.
On those 20-plus yard targets, he’s completed 5-of-10 deep throws for 198 yards and three touchdowns without an interception — and has forced two pass interference calls, both of which came on DJ Moore targets against the Texans.
This isn’t all coaching. Allen is indeed part of this shift in philosophy. He’s ultimately the one making the more aggressive decisions on the field.
Per Anthony Prohaska of Cover 1, 47.1% of Allen’s throws have been made beyond the first down marker, which is the second-highest of his career.
When Allen’s arm strength is being deployed at its full potential it makes Buffalo’s offense significantly harder to stop because secondaries are forced to defend much more field vertically compared to a dink-and-dunk attack.
On a given play, a defense go from thinking run to a deep shot 20-plus yards downfield in a matter of seconds, which couldn’t be more difficult. And Brady is utilizing play action at a 47.1% clip through two games, the highest in the NFL.
Allen’s pedal-to-the-floor aerial attack coupled with Buffalo’s ground game are the foundational elements of the Bills offensive eruption through two games.
