One of the big changes the Los Angeles Chargers are undergoing for the upcoming season is at the offensive coordinator spot on the coaching staff. Greg Roman is out, and Mike McDaniel is in after spending the last four years as the Miami Dolphins head coach.
McDaniel was let go by the Dolphins after failing to get out of the first round of the playoffs, but that task is now something he will be looking at in his new position with the Chargers. Given where the team’s talents are compared to Miami,
there’s a chance he might be able to be the missing piece Los Angeles needs.
“It was time for a change after the Chargers scored 15 combined points in their last two wild-card exits. Jim Harbaugh fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman, a longtime collaborator, and replaced him with Mike McDaniel to hopefully supercharge the offense as the former Dolphins coach did in his first couple years with Miami,” NFL.com contributor Bobby Kownack wrote.
“McDaniel’s arrival as a quarterback whisperer is good news for Justin Herbert, who already plays at a Pro Bowl level, but the impact of his high-octane system should be felt everywhere, from the promising tight end trio of Oronde Gadsden II, David Njoku and Charlie Kolar to Omarion Hampton in the backfield.”
McDaniel’s new system should make the Chargers offense more explosive, but it remains to be seen. The Chargers will spend the duration of training camp putting their finishing touches on the offense before going into the season, where they will look to win the AFC West for the first time since 2009.
