Next up in our 90-in-90 series is Chargers center Jacob Spomer!
The Basics
Height: 6’3
Weight: 290 pounds
College: Fresno State
Experience: Rookie
Spomer hails from Brentwood, California where he starred at Liberty High School, earning All-Area honors as a senior. Before landing at Fresno State, Spomer spent two seasons at Diablo Valley Junior College. He earned all-conference honors in 2021 after the COVID pandemic took his 2020 season away.
In his first season with the Bulldogs in 2022, Spomer started 14 games
at left tackle and was named Honorable Mention All-Mountain West. The following year, Spomer repeated on his Honorable Mention All-Mountain West honors while starting 10 games before going down with an injury late in the year. That injury followed him into 2024 as he was limited to just five games and four starts at left tackle to finish the season.
Prior to the 2025 season, Spomer made the transition from tackle to center. He started in all 13 games and earned First-Team All-Mountain West while being Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded pivot in the conference.
Spomer went undrafted during the 2026 NFL Draft before signing with the Chargers.
The Good
Spomer is a good football. Plain and simple. He’s undersized for a Division 1 offensive lineman in general and he still managed to win the job and compete as a multi-year starter at left tackle. That tells us he knows exactly how to get the most out of his skillset and physical capabilities.
He tested fairly well at Fresno State’s pro day, running 5.06 in the 40, jumping 28 inches in the vertical and 9’5” in the broad. His 4.60 in the short shuttle was also very good. It would have ranked third at this year’s combine behind only Keyland Rutledge (first-round pick) and Logan Jones (second round). His 7.37 in the three-cone drill would have ranked second among, as well, behind Utah’s Spencer Fano (first).
The Bad
Spomer’s size is his biggest knock and likely the reason he went undrafted. If he played center his entire career, he may have squeaked into day three, but the lack of experience and size combined were held against him. He’ll need to prove he belongs in the pros after only earning First-Team All-Mountain West honors once in his career while starting for a Group of 4 school.
2026 Outlook
I don’t believe Spomer will be able to win a spot on the final roster, but he sure seems like he was a dart throw as UDFA who fits the new model of a Chargers center under Mike McDaniel. He moves well as seen by his agility testing numbers which would have ranked among the best at this year’s combine for his position. I believe Spomer is destined for the practice squad and should have the upperhand over Josh Kaltenberger as their developmental center.
