“We do some things well” -Clark Lea, Postgame Conference
Yeah Clark, it’s called special teams. We averaged 52 yards punting, returned a PAT, and some sophomore named Josiah Broxton returned a punt for a touchdown when he wasn’t even the returner.
Thank goodness the special teams held it together because the rest of the team couldn’t really close things. The Entertainer squeezed 60 yards out of 10 attempts, throwing in some theatrics that had me pretty excited for the season, and Junior Sherill put
together a decent night receiving with 70 yards….
But against Austin Peay I feel like we really oughta be putting up double all our numbers if we are gonna have any chance against some of these bigger teams. You twist the PAT and the punt return around a little and suddenly we are only up something like 22-10, which I guess is definitionally still a win. We looked better than 28-9, and definitely better than 22-10, but looking good and winning good are two different things.
On defense, I think I’ve seen a play like the TD play like Austin Peay made in every single game of my time as a Vanderbilt fan: a receiver runs quickly and the nearest safety is absolutely powerless to stop them. We made tackles though, and you know what sometimes it’s gotta be the simple things in life.
Overall, not the game most of us expected but probably the game deep down inside a lot of y’all (my sunshine pump truly never runs out of juice [that juice, of course, is Sunny D]) knew was coming. We’ll take a step forward against Delaware and be ready to roll right up into our game against the Lol-pack, who got properly thwomped by Virginny this weekend. I’ve still got high hopes.
You didn’t think I’d forget did you? Yes, I’m gonna talk about Blaze Blazowitz and The Five-Star.
Blaze was good, but did you see how well Jared moves? His handoff on his first play is so twitchy, and then he lowers that shoulder and BAM lays a dude out right after that. Sure, he trips in open space a few plays later, but who among us possessed a perfect sense of balance when we were 19 years old? His arm, though, did you see how he whips that thing? That ball teleported into the receivers’ hands. His first collegiate drive ultimately ended with a turnover on downs, but it’s hard to blame that on him (ignore the delay). They obviously don’t trust him to go out there and command the team the way that Blaze can after so many more years of doing this, and I think they’re right not to do so, but maaaaaan I thought he looked good. Any other year I’d love to have Blaze, but this year we have Jared, who is probably gonna make some dumb mistakes that Blaze wouldn’t just because of the experience differential, but c’mon, let’s have some fun.
