The Baltimore Ravens re-signed Jake Moody to the practice squad on Monday, according to the NFL’s daily transaction notice, once again adding competition for kicker Tyler Loop after two misses inside 50 yards in the last three weeks.
Moody, 26, first signed in Baltimore on September 1 following Loop’s uneven preseason. But the second-year kicker went seven-for-seven on his kicks in Week 1, including a career-long 57-yard field goal, reviving team confidence and leading to Moody’s release a few days
later.
Loop continued to perform to start his sophomore campaign. A 49-yard attempt was blocked in Week 2, but he hit all six of his kicks in Rio, including a 56-yard game-winner, the first of his career, to cap off the Ravens’ seven-second miracle. The 25-year-old then crushed a 64-yard field goal in Week 4 that overshadowed a bad miss from 40 yards that seeemed to be an operational issue.
Loop knew the assignment in Atlanta in Week 5 with Lamar Jackson sidelined. He nailed two field goals from 50-plus, bringing him to five-for-five on such kicks for the year. But in Cleveland on Sunday, he pulled a fourth-quarter 49-yard attempt wide left, and the Ravens lost by three points.
Loop’s 76.9% field goal conversion rate is now well behind his 88.2% mark as a rookie. His success from long-distance has been remarkable after last season’s one-of-four showing, but three misses inside of 40 yards is unacceptable. The 2025 sixth-round pick obviously has the leg for the NFL, but his inconsistency is maddening.
Moody has dealt with his share of struggles since entering the league in 2023 as a 49ers third-round pick. He was relatively reliable as a rookie, but his play fell off a cliff in 2024, though a whopping 20 of his 34 attempts came from 40 yards or longer. Last year, he made 19 of his 23 attempts while playing for three different teams. Notably, he went 10-for-11 in Washington to close out the year but could not beat out a rookie for the Commanders’ kicking job in training camp.
It would likely take a calamitous Week 7 showing from Loop to motivate the Ravens to make a change, but if misses keep stacking over the next few weeks, Jesse Minter may have no choice but to give Moody a shot.
