Philip Rivers and NC State are putting the finishing touches on a deal that will make Rivers the next head football coach in Raleigh, per various reports this morning. NC State’s coaching search began and ended with Rivers, who has been the top choice throughout the process.
I’m dubious about the wisdom of this
move but would be more than happy to see my concerns prove completely overblown.
From a fundraising perspective, there isn’t a better hire that NC State could have made, and if he puts the right people around him—especially in the front office—then he will be in a good position to hit the ground running. And maybe that’s all that really matters anymore, it’s tough to say. It will be interesting to see just how much more money he will have at his disposal, and what that does for recruiting. State badly needed a jolt of energy with this hire and Rivers certainly delivers there.
