Newcastle United’s search for defensive reinforcements keeps expanding into Serie A territory.
After being linked to Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini during the past few days, a fresh report is linking the Magpies with Fiorentina right-back Dodo.
With Matthias Jaissle more than expected to strengthen both full-back positions before the transfer window closes, the Brazilian has emerged as another name to watch, although Newcastle do not appear to be leading the race at this stage.
According to Italian outlet
La Nazione, Newcastle are among the clubs monitoring Dodo’s situation as uncertainty continues over his contract with Fiorentina, but it doesn’t sound like the interest has gone past that point.
“In Italy, besides Roma, which objectively seems the club most likely to make a concrete move for Dodo, Napoli remains the option,” La Nazione reported. “But it’s from abroad, in England, that Fiorentina could receive a tempting financial offer. Keep an eye on Newcastle’s moves.”
The report suggests Newcastle’s interest is currently dormant at best, with Roma and Napoli viewed as the leading contenders for the defender. However, Fiorentina could still receive a significant offer from Tyneside before the transfer window closes.
If anything, at least the timing of the link is notable given Newcastle’s need for additional depth at right-back. Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth have both departed this summer, leaving Tino Livramento as the club’s only established senior right-back, even with a reported interest in the England international from elsewhere and his track record of injuries.
Dodo, meanwhile, has been one of Serie A’s more consistent full-backs since joining Fiorentina from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2022. The 27-year-old has made more than 150 appearances for the Italian club, contributing three goals and 13 assists while establishing himself as a regular starter in Italy.
Whether Newcastle decide to formalize their interest remains unclear. Recent reports have linked the Magpies with several defenders as Jaissle continues reshaping the squad, while The Athletic has also reported that adding at least one full-back remains a priority before the window closes.
