After a two-fight 2026 campaign that saw him win and defend the IBF super middleweight title in merciless fashion, Cuban menace Osleys Iglesias is on the clock for his inaugural mandatory defense against Malik Zinad.
You know how I made a big deal about how Artur Subkhankulov, who fights Andy Cruz for the vacant lightweight belt in a few weeks, was a genuinely capable fighter and not just another of the IBF’s endless conveyor belt of mediocre non-contenders who somehow tumbled up the rankings? Zinad
(24-1, 18 KO) is not that kind of exception. He has the ignominy of being Dmitry Bivol’s only stoppage win in the latter’s last 13 fights and his two wins in the last two years came above the 168-pound limit against nothing competition.
It’s not even clear to me why or how they’re ordering this. The IBF usually keeps the top one or two slots empty until someone wins an official final eliminator, which is the case here; their rankings go Blank, Blank, Kevin Lele Sadjo, and then Zinad. How that translates to “mandatory challenger Malik Zinad” is beyond me, which might just be a case of me slacking off on my research into Sanctioning Body Lore. In my defense, extended exposure causes Necronomicon-like effects and I don’t need more eyes on the inside.
I’ve sent them a message asking for more details and will update this piece if I receive a response. Giving someone a top-5 ranking in a division he’s never been part of is some WBA crap, especially when his only notable win is beating Jerome Pampellone.
That said, their 168-pound rankings are just kind of a trainwreck in general. After the quartet above it’s Oliver Zaren (just lost to Iglesias), Bektemir Melikuziev (WBA mandatory), and Nikita Zon (just lost to Jaime Munguia). A bit of spring cleaning wouldn’t go amiss.
At least it keeps Iglesias (16-0, 15 KO) busy. His prospects for unification, already slim by virtue of being a terrifying knockout machine with limited financial support and presence in the public eye, are now zero until Canelo runs out of other options. All he can really do at this point is puff up the highlight reel.
