Andrew Heaney, who was part of the Texas Rangers’ rotation in their 2023 championship season, has announced that he is retiring.
Heaney, 34, was originally a first round pick of the Miami Marlins in 2012 out of Oklahoma State. He was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in December, 2014, as part of a seven player deal, with the Dodgers trading him away the same day to the Anaheim Angels for Howie Kendrick.
Heaney was with the Angels from 2015 until the 2021 trade deadline, performing generally as a middling
starting pitcher. After spending the final two months of the 2021 season with the New York Yankees, Heaney had a quality 16 game stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, leading the Rangers to sign him to a two year deal after the season.
Heaney spent the bulk of the 2023 season in the rotation for the Rangers, ultimately making 26 starts and six relief appearances. In the 2023 postseason, he made three starts and two relief appearances. He picked up the win in Game 4 of the World Series, when he held the D-Backs to one run in five innings.
Heaney followed that up with a 2024 season that was pretty similar to his 2023 season, throwing 160 innings in 31 starts and a relief appearance. All told, he had a 4.22 ERA and 4.34 FIP in 307 innings for the Rangers over two seasons, good for a 1.6 bWAR and 96 ERA+.
Heaney signed a one year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2025 season, and put up a 5.39 ERA in 23 starts and three relief appearances before being released at the end of August. Heaney signed with the Dodgers for the month of September, but only appeared in one game.
Heaney ends his career with a 56-72 record in 230 games, with a 4.57 ERA, 4.50 FIP and 92 ERA+.
