90+3’ – Another shot blocked and there’s the final whistle, and Everton are through to the Carabao Cup quarter finals!
90+2’ – Deep cross from Toure that Wissa can’t control, goal kick.
The Blues have frittered away a two-goal lead at home against the Toon before, but there will be no repeat of those shenanigans tonight.
90+1’ – Newcastle have another corner that Everton clear.
There will be a minimum of three extra minutes here.
89’ – Burn beats JOB in the air to head home and make it 3-1, and immediately
more handbags ensue inside the goal. Burn and Joelinton are scrapping with Pickford and Tarky steps in to haul away the two miscreants. More pushing and shoving as the rest of the 22 all enter the box for the fray. The four original culprits are all booked.
87’ – Hall finds Elanga behind Rohl and his narrow-angle shot is parried away by Pickford.
Christian Norgaard and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have come on for Dewsbury-Hall and Mykolenko.
85’ – Rohl duels Elanga to win a corner on the right. KDH inswinger, Hornicek whiffs on it
80’ – Newcastle corner, Pickford pushed to the ground and a foul is called. Meanwhile handbags in the area between Myko and Schar and both are booked.
78’ – The Everton players are being serenaded by the fans to a loud rendition of “Spirit of the Blues” and all is well again in Toffeeland for now, even as the Grealish drama will likely rear it’s ugly head again.
77’ – Brennan Johnson and Charly Alcaraz are on for the Blues, with Dibling and George going off.
Johnson immediately wins a corner on the right. Into the box, partly cleared, almost falls to Alcaraz who was looking to volley that before a Magpies player clears the danger.
75’ – You know this means that Andy Burnham and our youth correspondent Geoff both have to be at every Everton game at Hill Dickinson from here on out after the Blues have cruised to wins in both games they have been in attendance.
73’ – KDH is booked for a poor challenge on Wissa at the touchline.
71’ – Hall takes a shot that Pickford collects.
Now a deep cross from Hall and Pickford saves at point-blank range from Elanga, ball pops out to Joelinton and his full-blooded shot is blocked by a sprawling JOB. Whew.
69’ – THERE’S THE DAGGER!! Garner makes a vital interception and he’s off to the races. He finds KDH in space on the left who threads a lovely cross to Barry at the back of the box, the striker controls, takes a beat and then slots home high towards the right and it’s 3-0!!!
64’ – Myko heads the ball out for another corner. Hall takes it but again the Blues clear.
Respite from the bench now as Armstrong comes on for Hackney who was booked just minutes ago. Excellent game for Hayden Hackney who did everything for the Blues today.
Toure comes on for Murphy, it’s going to be all-out attack for the Magpies.
60’ – Hackney booked for a desperation foul.
Hall with an inswinging corner from the Everton left that Pickford bravely punches away and Elanga hoofs the rebound over.
57’ – Pressure ramping up and Newcastle are throwing everything at the Everton goal, the Blues are hurling themselves in front of crosses and shots.
55’ – Everton happy to sit back and let the Toon have the ball.
Cross from the right cut out by JOB, falls to Dedic and his shot goes off Hackney and over for a corner. Burn gets to it before Pickford but heads it tamely over.
54’ – Woof! Wissa does well to get behind JOB and controls a long ball, tries to head the bouncing ball over the advancing Pickford but can’t get enough power on it and the England #1 gratefully gathers!
50’ – Wissa’s been caught twice by Tarky and Garner in quick succession and he’s unhappy. Latest freekick is a deep one but Everton clear their lines.
49’ – Murphy with a potshot from distance that rolls to Pickford.
Everton have been notoriously slow starters immediately after halftime, but they have overcome that immediate phase.
46’ – Second half underway, Jaissle makes some sweeping changes. Wissa, Elanga and Joelinton all on, with Osula, Ramsey and Barnes off.
Halftime Thoughts – Everton with two well-taken goals to lead Newcastle 2-0 at the break. The visitors have had the better chances so far in the game but it’s the Blues who have scored with Garner and Hackney making the difference. The latter in particular has been excellent with an all-around performance.
45+2’ – No further drama as Newcastle are stunned, and there’s the halftime whistle.
45’ – Poor giveaway from Rohl and Barnes has a shooting chance but muffs it with just Pickford to beat, Garner got a block! Whew!
KDH goes right up the other way and is fouled, but Barry plays the advantage and lofts a ball into the box.. and Hackney comes screaming in with a flying volley to slam home in front of the steep South Stand and Everton lead 2-0!!
43’ – Newcastle have Everton pinned back in their own half. Now the Mags run at the Blues and both Osula and Barnes fling themselves to the ground in the box looking for a penalty, and rookie ref Farai Hallam stays strong and waves away the Toon protests.
39’ – Now Tarky blocks a shot from outside the box, falls to Barnes but he drags his fierce shot wide of the near post, phew.
Tarky gets away with one there, as it looked like he’d gotten the ball out for a corner right by the flag, but with the assistant ref on the other side of the pitch, he played on after looking up at the referee who didn’t blow either way.
37’ – Everton throw deep down the right. JOB flings it in, but Hall goes down for a shove by Barry and a foul is called. That was weak.
Newcastle try to play out the back, and Hackney close to stealing it off Ramsey but the Newcastle player goes down way easily and the ref bails them out again.
34’ – The Newcastle right back makes a hash of a long ball from Pickford, George harasses him, Hackney sees Garner running into space and lays it off for him.. and Garner with a sliding shot into the far corner and Everton lead!!
29’ – Danger! Dibling giveaway, Osula into space on the left and just as he’s about uncork a shot Tarkowski slides in with a perfectly-timed challenge to end him and the threat. Proper centerhalf tackle that, Osula won’t be sending him a Christmas card for sure.
Now Rohl can charge down the right in acres of space, and.. poor cross cut away. Ball comes to Dibling and he has a chance to cross.. and his pass for Rohl is awful and cleared. Two giveaways for Dibling in quick succession.
26’ – Now Hackney gets into the box again, Barry finds Dibling and the winger tries a shot in a the near post but it’s not well-hit.
25’ – Better from the Blues as a George shot is blocked, Hackney tries to snatch at the rebound but the visitors clear. That shot from George clearly went off Burns’ arm but his arm was right by his side and that’s no penalty.
22’ – Dibling takes on two, beats one and wins a corner. KDH inswinger, really good one into the six-yard box but the visitors scramble it away.
21’ – Myko and George combine well on the left and the former puts in a low cross, Hackney muffs it though and the ball rolls through to Hornicek.
17’ – Ramsey streaks down the left and then Pickford fluffs the save spilling the ball back into the box for O’Brien to hoof away.
Now a shot from distance that Pickford parries away for a corner that eventually comes to nothing. The Toffees had started brightly but it’s all Magpies now.
15’ – Everton make a mess of clearing their lines and Newcastle have two or three shooting opportunities before Myko can scramble the ball away.
12’ – Long cross into the box and Barnes nicks in behind Rohl to head on goal but Jordan Pickford is in quick to make a big save.
Corner is into the six-yard box and the Blues can’t clear, but Schar blasts it over and we survive.
10’ – Everton have a chance to move down the right wing but Dibling starts drifting in and lets Ramsey steal in and nick the ball, and then the Toffees winger fouls the visiting player. Chalk that down to a lack of playing time.
7’ – Vitaliy Mykolenko tugged down, but a backheel flick from George falls to Hackney to run away with, but now the ref brings it back for a foul when playing advantage was the right move, oof.
5’ – Long freekick for the Mags into the box, James Tarkowski heads away and Hall tries a shot from distance but lofted way over and wide.
Barry goes over chasing a long goalkick and Burn looked to have tugged his shirt, but the ref wants nothing to do with it.
2’ – Hackney immediately into the thick of things, finds Thierno Barry who touches a pass to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, shot deflected out for a corner.
Corner immediately cleared for a throw-in that Jake O’Brien takes long. Ball bounces about, falls to Tyrique George who makes a hash of his shot and it’s cleared.
1’ – James Garner kicks off and gets us underway.
The siren has gone off and Z-Cars is blaring out as the Blues come out to a loud roar, with dozens of flags and banners waving on a cool evening by the River Mersey.
Branthwaite is still out due to concussion protocol but the big news tonight is that Grealish is out after being suspended by the club for a breach of discipline, with rumours floating about on Twitter that he was out on a bender in Manchester on Thursday night.
Starting Lineups
Everton – Hayden Hackney and Tyler Dibling both start! Jarrad Branthwaite and Jack Grealish still out with youngster Braiden Graham on the bench again.
Newcastle – The Toon lineup is in, that’s a strong bench they have.
