UNC gets the Panthers without starting QB Mason Heintschel, a game likely to be pivotal to perceptions of Bill Belichick’s program. Win, and UNC will have its first top 25 win under its legendary coach with a clear path to a winning record. Lose, and UNC will be sitting on a three game losing streak after falling to another team dealing with QB issues. After flashing in all three phases against Notre Dame, this next game feels like an inflection point for UNC’s season.
Here are three things to watch
in the Tar Heels’ match up against Pittsburgh Saturday.
How will the Pitt offense fare without Mason Heinstchel?
With Heintschel, the Pitt offense has been decent so far this season, posting a high of 35 points against Virginia Tech last week and a low of 12 points against UCF a month ago. Heinstchel ranks fifth in the ACC in passer rating on 30 throws per game. Mason does a good job of avoiding negative plays, with only one interception and five sacks in 2026. However, Heintschel has been extremely inefficient in his last two P4 games, completing 44% of his passes against Syracuse (10-23) and 57% against Virginia Tech (10-18), averaging only 5.8 yards per attempt in those two games. Two-thirds of Mason’s passing yards and thirteen of his fourteen touchdown throws this season came against Bucknell and Miami of Ohio. In three P4 games, Heintschel averages 149 passing yards per game and 0.33 touchdowns per game.
Now that Heintschel’s lost for the season with an ACL injury, in comes Holden Geriner. A fifth year player, Geriner will be starting his first game as a college QB. Geriner spent his first three years at Auburn and his fourth at Texas State. In his career, Geriner is 28-47 for 335 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and he has ten yards rushing on 11 attempts. However, Geriner last week, on the road at Virginia Tech and entering a tight game late, connected on a 29-yard TD pass to put Pitt up 11 in the fourth quarter. Geriner in that fourth quarter went 8-12 for 78 yards and touchdown.
Will the Pitt offense with Geriner take a step back? A case can be made Geriner raises the floor for the Pitt offense while lowering its ceiling.
Can UNC’s defensive line hold up against the Pitt rushing attack?
Pitt’s offense been average on the ground this season with the exception of Syracuse, where the Panthers rushed for 245 yards on 37 carries. The Panther ground game has been more by committee than a bell cow approach, with four players logging more than 25 carries on the season. Meanwhile, UNC in its last two games allowed Clemson to romp for 187 yards and Notre Dame to amass a season-high 257 yards on the ground. 311 of those 444 yards came after halftime.
Both Clemson and Notre Dame attacked the depth and size of UNC’s defensive line, choosing to run more than pass despite some clear coverage liabilities in the Tar Heel secondary. Opponents will continue to force UNC deep into its rotation on the defensive front, a potential liability noted at Tar Heel Blog in the preseason by Akil Guruparan:
My worry, though, is depth. I’ve only really talked about the candidates to start in this breakdown, and that’s not really by choice. Not only do the names listed on the roster after the guys I’ve mentioned not have track records, they’ve also been virtually absent from any and all preseason reporting I’ve gotten my eyes on. A defensive line rotates more than about any other on the field; it’s a uniquely tiring position.
Now, add the fact that starting DT Isaiah Johnson is questionable after departing the Notre Dame game with a (?) injury, further stressing depth against the run.
Will Dean Smith be right about this game?
Smith noted (correctly) that teams can be most dangerous in the game after losing a key player. Teams can rally around the adversity and have an exceptionally sharp set of practices as everyone locks in to compensate for the loss. Meanwhile, opponents might relax a little knowing they’re facing a wounded adversary. Pittsburgh is 5-0 after going on the road and spotting Virginia Tech an early 14 point lead. The Panthers have a lot to play for and a lot of self-belief at the moment.
Make no mistake, the loss of Heintschel hurts. Metrics don’t factor injuries in their ratings, which explains how SP+ sees Pittsburgh as roughly a 16 point favorite and FEI sees the Panthers as roughly a 12 point favorite. Most sports books have Pittsburgh as a 3.5 favorite, a discrepancy which infers Heintschel to be worth around ten points to the final score. Still, Heintschel’s arguably been a liability to Pitt’s efficiency against P4 competition, and Geriner has been waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time. Will his teammates rally around him?
