For many fans, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is the G.O.A.T.
However, since he was recalled to the Germany national team for the FIFA World Cup in North America, there has been a lot of vitriol directed at the 40-year-old star.
The reaction is understandable, but it also feels a bit overblown. Neuer is not the same goalkeeper who lifted the World Cup in 2014, revolutionized the sweeper-keeper role, and spent a decade dominating world football. Age catches everyone, and there have been moments
over the last few seasons when his performances have shown that he is no longer at his absolute peak.
That said, Germany is not bringing Neuer back because of nostalgia alone. Experience matters at the World Cup, especially in a tournament where a single mistake can end a nation’s hopes. Few players in international football history have seen more pressure-packed situations than Neuer. He has played in World Cups, European Championships, Champions League finals, and countless title-deciding matches. That knowledge can be invaluable in a squad that still has a number of younger players learning how to handle the biggest stage.
The larger question is whether Neuer should simply be part of the squad or whether he should be Germany’s undisputed No. 1 goalkeeper. That is where the debate becomes much more interesting. Germany has capable options who have performed well at club level and deserve consideration. If Neuer is selected solely because of his name and reputation, criticism would be fair. If he earns his place through performances and proves he can still operate at the required level, then his inclusion becomes much easier to justify.
From a Bayern Munich perspective, there is also an emotional element. Neuer has been one of the defining figures of both Bayern Munich and Germany for well over a decade. Seeing him get one final opportunity on the sport’s biggest stage carries a certain appeal. Whether he starts every match or serves as an experienced veteran presence, his return gives Germany another proven leader in a tournament where leadership often becomes just as important as talent.
